Honor Phone Notifications Delayed (MagicOS): Complete Fix

October 16, 20268 min read

Honor phones are known for long battery life, and part of the reason is aggressive background management. The downside: messages, reminders and security alerts that arrive late, arrive silently, or only appear when you open the app. This guide walks through every setting that affects notifications on Honor phones running MagicOS (and the older Magic UI), in the order most likely to fix the problem.

Quick fix: Settings → Apps → App launch → find the app → turn off automatic management → enable Auto-launch, Secondary launch and Run in background. Then in Settings → Notifications & status bar → the app, allow notifications, banners and lock screen display. Exempt the app from battery optimization and make sure Do Not Disturb is off.

First, which Honor do you have?

Honor was part of Huawei until late 2020, when it became a separate company. That history matters for two reasons:

  • Older Honor phones (made while Honor was a Huawei brand) run EMUI or Magic UI, which is essentially EMUI. Menu paths match Huawei's, so our Huawei notification guide applies directly. Some of these models launched without Google Play services.
  • Newer Honor phones run MagicOS. Many models launched from 2021 onward ship with Google Play services in international markets, so apps that rely on Google's push service generally work once the background settings are right.

Not sure? Look for the Google Play Store app on your phone, or check Settings → About phone for the MagicOS or Magic UI version. Menu names below may be labelled slightly differently on your version; the Settings search bar is the fastest way to find any of them.

Step 1: Allow notifications for the app

  • MagicOS: Settings → Notifications & status bar (may be labelled Notifications) → select the app.
  • Magic UI / EMUI-based Honor: Settings → Notifications → select the app.

Then make sure:

  • Allow notifications is on.
  • Banners is on, so alerts drop down from the top of the screen.
  • Lock screen notifications are shown.
  • Sound and Vibration are on if you want them.

Step 2: Check each notification category

Apps divide their notifications into categories (Android "channels"), and each one has its own switch, sound and importance. A messaging app can be allowed overall while its "Messages" category is silent.

  • Scroll down the app's notification page to the category list (it may be under More settings or Notification categories).
  • Open the categories that matter and confirm they're allowed, have a sound, show banners and appear on the lock screen.
  • If a category is set to Silent or a low importance, raise it.

Step 3: Rule out Do Not Disturb

Open Settings → Sounds & vibration → Do Not Disturb, or toggle it from the control panel. Turn it off and check for scheduled rules (bedtime, meetings) that may switch it on automatically. If you want Do Not Disturb but need one app to get through, add it to the allowed apps or exceptions list.

Step 4: Set App launch to manual

App launch decides whether an app may start itself, be started by others, and keep running in the background. Under automatic management, apps you open rarely tend to lose all three, which is the most common cause of late notifications.

  • MagicOS: Settings → Apps → App launch. On some versions it may be under Settings → Battery → App launch.
  • Magic UI / EMUI-based Honor: Settings → Battery → App launch.
  • Turn off automatic management for the app, then enable Auto-launch, Secondary launch and Run in background in the dialog. Tap OK.

Only do this for apps that need it. Our App launch explainer covers what each toggle does and which apps deserve manual management; it applies to Honor phones as well.

Step 5: Exempt the app from battery optimization

  • Settings → Apps → Apps (or Special access) → Battery optimization, or search "battery optimization" in Settings.
  • Switch the filter to All apps, select the app and choose Don't allow.
  • Under Settings → Battery, turn off Power saving mode (and any ultra or extreme power saving mode) while testing. These modes restrict background activity for all apps.

Step 6: Lock the app in recent apps

Open the recent apps view and swipe down on the app's card (or tap the lock icon) until a padlock appears. "Clear all" will then leave it running.

Step 7: Exclude it from cleanup and data limits

  • If the Optimizer app offers to close apps when the screen locks or clean memory automatically, disable that or exclude the app.
  • Under Settings → Apps → the app → Data usage, make sure Wi-Fi and mobile data are both allowed, and that Data saver isn't restricting it.
  • Uninstall third-party "booster" or "cleaner" apps.

Step 8: Test properly

  • Lock the phone and leave it untouched for 10–15 minutes.
  • Trigger a real notification: have someone message you, or use the app's own test feature.
  • Confirm it arrives on time, with sound, and shows on the lock screen. Test on both Wi-Fi and mobile data.
  • Still late? Restart the phone, update the app and system, and sign out and back in to the app to refresh its push registration.

Honor phones and security apps

Security apps need these settings more than most. An anti-theft app like Guardyn watches for a charger being unplugged, the phone being pulled from a pocket, or the phone being moved while locked. It also receives remote commands, such as a remote photo or lock, as high-priority push messages, and sends evidence alerts in the background. If MagicOS stops it, alerts can be delayed until it is too late.

  • Guardyn requires Google Play services for push and remote commands, so check that your Honor model has them.
  • Guardyn's Settings → Background reliability shortcut lists brand-specific steps and opens the matching settings screen. It supports Honor phones in the latest version of Guardyn; if you don't see it yet, update the app or use the manual steps above. Either way, fix anything the dashboard health check flags (notifications, overlay, location, battery optimization, Device Admin).
  • You can download Guardyn from Google Play or as a standalone APK from guardyn.tech.

Frequently asked questions

Why are notifications delayed on my Honor phone?

Usually because MagicOS's power management stopped the app in the background, or because a notification category is set to silent. Switching the app's App launch setting to manual, exempting it from battery optimization and checking its notification categories fixes most cases.

Does my Honor phone have Google Play services?

It depends on the model and market. Many Honor phones launched after Honor became independent from Huawei ship with Google Play services in international markets, while some older Huawei-era Honor models do not. Check for the Google Play Store app or look for Google Play services in Settings → Apps.

Where is App launch on MagicOS?

On most versions it is under Settings → Apps → App launch; on some it may be under Settings → Battery. Searching 'App launch' in Settings finds it on all versions.

My notifications work on Wi-Fi but not on mobile data. Why?

The app is probably blocked from using mobile data in the background, or Data saver is on. Check the app's data permissions under Settings → Apps → the app → Data usage, and the mobile network data settings.

Will these changes hurt battery life?

Slightly, and only for the apps you change. Limit manual App launch to apps that genuinely need to alert you in real time, such as messaging, alarms and security apps.
