Does an Anti-Theft App Work on Huawei Phones Without Google Services?

October 16, 20268 min read

If you own a recent Huawei phone, you've probably noticed that some apps behave strangely: notifications never arrive, "Sign in with Google" fails, or the app won't install from the usual places. Anti-theft apps are hit especially hard, because they depend on exactly the services Huawei phones are missing. Here's an honest explanation of what works, what doesn't, and what you can do about it.

Short answer: mostly no. Most Android anti-theft apps, including Guardyn, rely on Google Play services for push messages, remote commands and sign-in. On a Huawei phone without Google services, those remote features don't work. Some on-device features may still run, but the parts that let you act after the phone is gone usually won't. If anti-theft protection matters to you, use a phone with Google Play services.

GMS vs HMS: what's the difference?

Android itself is open source. But most of what people think of as "Android" on a typical phone comes from Google Mobile Services (GMS), a licensed bundle that includes:

  • Google Play Store — where most apps are installed and updated.
  • Google Play services — a background system app that provides shared features to other apps.
  • Firebase Cloud Messaging (FCM) — Google's push service, delivered through Google Play services.
  • Google account sign-in, Google's fused location provider, Find My Device, Play Integrity and more.

In May 2019 the US government added Huawei to its Entity List, which stopped Google from licensing GMS for new Huawei devices. Huawei phones launched after that point generally ship without Google services. Huawei built its own replacement, Huawei Mobile Services (HMS):

  • AppGallery instead of the Play Store.
  • HMS Core instead of Google Play services, including Push Kit (Huawei's push service), Location Kit and Huawei ID sign-in.
  • Find Device, Huawei's own lost-phone service.

HMS is a capable platform, but it isn't a drop-in replacement. An app built for GMS must add separate HMS support, test it, and often publish to AppGallery. Many apps never do.

Why anti-theft apps depend on Google services

An anti-theft app has two jobs: detect a theft while the phone is with the thief, and let you act on the phone remotely. The second job needs a reliable way to reach a locked, idle phone from the outside. On Android, that way is almost always FCM push.

  • Remote commands (take a photo, lock, sound a siren, locate) are sent as push messages. No FCM, no commands.
  • Account sign-in commonly uses a Google account through Google Play services. Without it, the app can't link the phone to your account or a web console.
  • Location is often obtained through Google's fused location provider, which needs Google Play services.
  • App integrity checks (Play Integrity) and Play Store purchases also need GMS.

What works and what doesn't

Here's the general picture for a GMS-based anti-theft app on a Huawei phone without Google services. Individual apps vary.

FeatureWithout Google Play services
Install from Google PlayNo — needs a direct APK or AppGallery listing
Remote commands via pushNo — FCM is unavailable
Google account sign-inUsually fails
Location via Google's providerUnreliable or unavailable
Alerts sent through the app's serversUsually no if they require a signed-in account
Purely on-device features (sensor alarm, local evidence)May work, but often untested

What this means for Guardyn

We'd rather be clear than have you find out after a theft.

  • Guardyn requires Google Play services for push and remote commands. Remote photos, lock, audio, burst and siren commands are delivered as high-priority FCM messages.
  • Sign-in uses your Google account through Google Play services. Email alerts are sent through Guardyn's servers and require a signed-in account, so they won't work without it.
  • Location uses Google's fused location provider.
  • Guardyn is distributed on Google Play and as a standalone APK from guardyn.tech/download. The APK can be installed without the Play Store, but it still needs Google Play services for the features above.
  • Some purely on-device parts, such as the charger, pocket and motion guards that sound a siren, and evidence saved to the encrypted on-device vault, don't depend on push. They may run on a phone without Google services, but we don't test or support that setup, so please don't rely on it.

Huawei Mobile Services support: we're evaluating it. There's no release date and no guarantee it will ship; we'll announce it on this blog if it does.

Your realistic options

1. Check whether your phone already has Google services

Huawei phones launched before mid-2019, and some models sold later that were originally certified earlier, still have Google Play services. Open Settings → Apps and search for "Google Play services". If it's there and up to date, GMS-based apps should work once you configure the background settings in our App launch guide and Huawei notification fix.

2. Use Huawei's built-in Find Device

On HMS phones, sign in with a Huawei ID and turn on Find Device (search for it in Settings). It can show your phone's location, play a sound, lock it and erase it remotely. It won't capture evidence of who took it, but it's far better than nothing, and it's built in.

3. Use a phone with Google Play services for anti-theft

If evidence capture and remote control matter to you — for example you charge your phone in cafés or commute on crowded transport — a phone with Google Play services is the dependable choice. Many Honor phones launched after 2021 ship with Google services in international markets; see our Honor MagicOS guide for getting reliable background alerts on them.

4. Keep the system and apps updated

Whatever phone you use, install system updates and keep your security apps current. Support for platforms changes over time, and updates often fix background-delivery bugs.

5. Avoid unofficial "GMS installer" workarounds

Tools that sideload Google services onto Huawei phones come and go. They often break after updates, may stop working without warning, and ask for broad permissions. On a device you want to keep secure, that's a poor trade.

Bottom line

An anti-theft app is only as good as its ability to reach your phone and tell you what happened. On a Huawei phone without Google services, most GMS-based apps lose that ability. Use Huawei's Find Device for basic location and remote wipe, and if you want intruder photos, remote capture and instant alerts, use a phone with Google Play services. Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my Huawei phone has Google Play services?

Look for the Google Play Store app, or open Settings → Apps and search for 'Google Play services'. Huawei models launched before mid-2019 generally have them; most models launched afterwards do not.

Can I install Guardyn on a Huawei phone without Google services?

The standalone APK from guardyn.tech can be installed on most Android phones, but Guardyn requires Google Play services for push and remote commands, and its sign-in uses your Google account through Google Play services. Without them, remote commands and alerts that go through Guardyn's servers will not work, so we don't support this setup today.

Will Google Find My Device work on a Huawei phone without GMS?

No. Find My Device depends on Google Play services. Huawei phones without GMS use Huawei's own Find Device feature, tied to a Huawei ID.

Does Guardyn support Huawei Mobile Services (HMS)?

Not today. We're evaluating Huawei Mobile Services support, but we have no release date and can't promise it will ship.

Is it safe to install Google services on a Huawei phone with workarounds?

We don't recommend it. Unofficial methods to add Google services often break after updates, may be blocked by Google, and require granting broad permissions to unverified tools, which is a poor trade-off on a phone you want to keep secure.

Protect your phone before it's too late

Guardyn captures intruder photos, records audio, and tracks GPS location the moment someone tries to steal your phone.
